Absinthe Vegas makes my list as one of the best shows in Vegas because it is truly a great work of art and it takes me straight back to the classic Vegas of decades ago. Absinthe in a word is completely amazing! It is a production show, not necessarily a musical performance, but its quite a unique show and hard to categorize. It’s a hearty mix of cabaret and acrobatics, earning it some very well-deserved critical acclaim. The show touches on very adult themes, coupling serious topics with a flair of humor. Think Moulin Rouge mixed with an adult-themed circus. The decor involves colorful stained-cut glass, mirrors, and old time artifacts. It is hosted in a tent! Talk about posterity!
Spiegel world (which translates to play world) is a traveling and resident circus, and they are the creators of Absinthe. The Vegas production was first hosted at Caesars Palace in April 2011, for a six month trial run. After the show proved to be successful, the season was extended and Caesars Palace built a custom tent for the show. What began as a little production in New York City, playing on South Street Seaport’s Pier 17 under the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River became a smashing Las Vegas success story.
The host of Absinthe Vegas is the Gazillionaire who does the majority of the speaking along with his lovely assistant, Penny Pibbetts. Keeping in the old time Barnum and Baily circus tradition, the hosts introduce acts brought together from around the world. The show features high wire tight rope walkers who use an Ab Roller way up high, a Green Fairy who performs a song and dance burlesque-style striptease, and roller skating man and woman team, among other amazing artists of incredible strength, flexibility, and nerve. There is plenty of sexuality, adult humor, and breath-taking performances to witness at Absinthe Vegas.
I could rave on about this show forever, but I will allow someone qualified to give his expert opinion. Paul Carr (Huffington Post) had this to say about Absinthe: If I could only see one show my entire life, Id want it to be that. Quite the endorsement, isn’t it? That matches the New York Post who called Absinthe an “off-beat European circus on acid.”
Absinthe Vegas plays at 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, so it is dark Monday and Tuesday nights. It’s approximately 90 minutes of pure, classic, adult entertainment. Absinthe Vegas is truly a gem, and very much one of the best shows in Las Vegas.
